Background

My medical and scientific career in Rome, where I studied Medicine and specialized in Pediatrics and in Allergy and Immunology. During this time, I developed a strong interest in Immunology, allergy and infectious diseases. My experiences at renowned centers in France and United States together with The Karolinska Institute in Sweden allowed me to deepen my expertise in immunology and virology, contributing to studies on HIV pathogenesis and a better understanding of immunological mechanisms of defense.

Thus, my work expanded to translational immunology, particularly to the characterization of primary immunodeficiencies. My scientific efforts spanned from molecular and functional investigation on primary antibody defects to the interplay between immune response and immune dysregulation. In this role, I have successfully integrated clinical care with research aimed at a better understanding of immune-mediated and rare disorders on the field. My research has increasingly focused on translational immunology regarding primary immunodeficiencies, atopic disorders, and antibody defects using advanced molecular and genetic techniques to improve diagnostic precision and individualized therapeutic strategies.

Research

Our research group is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of immune dysregulation that contribute to allergic and immunological diseases. We employ a strong translational approach that connects clinical observations with laboratory research.

Our focus includes recurrent infections, atopic disorders, and primary immunodeficiencies, particularly those related to antibody defects integrating advanced genetic, molecular, and immunological analyses. This integrated approach has led to the discovery of novel disease-causing genes and variants of known genes associated with atypical phenotypes. It has also enhanced our understanding of the pathogenic pathways driving immune dysfunction. Our goal is to identify biomarkers for disease progression and therapeutic response, thereby enabling precision diagnosis and personalized treatments. Additionally, our group actively participates in national and international collaborative studies aimed at improving the clinical management and long-term outcomes of patients with rare immune-mediated disorders.
